This Doodlebops Live In Concert DVD is a compilation of the concert scenes from 25 episodes of the TV show. Between each of the scenes, there are interviews, improvised sketches and other cute tidbits we shot whenever we had extra studio time. Or at least there's supposed to be. I've never actually watched this video so I'm not sure how much extra footage made the final cut. If you want to see the full "directors cut" where I was going for a "VH1 Behind The Music" vibe, you can find that in this Random Collection of DVDs.
Full disclosure, very little of the concert footage in The Doodlebops is actually live. In season one, we didn't have any fans so I shot the concert scenes on a tiny sound stage without an audience. Then I flew to Winnipeg to shoot audience reaction shots at a Kids' CBC live show, and inserted those shots afterwards to make it look like a real concert.
In seasons two and three, we had a pretty solid fan base, so the audience shots are real. We put out a press release that we were taping a live concert and had no trouble filling the house. But we spent four days shooting the dance sequences without an audience first. We could only afford three cameras so we recorded each sequence with multiple passes so I could be sure that we got all the shots we needed. Then we invited the audience to the theater on the final day and did one pass for each song with the cameras turned around, capturing just enough reverse angles and swooping jib shots connecting the actors to the audience to make the concert scenes feel real.
